An upward trip towards Darjeeling has its own thrill and excitement. The Tiger Hill
The Tiger Hill is located at a height of about 2590 metres above the sea level and is a very interesting spot. It is located at a distance of around eleven kilometres from the town. It is possible to get beautiful glances of the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. The mountain ranges of Kanchenjunga are also visible to the naked eyes from this spot, making it well known all across the world. The people and tourists of Darjeeling are known to see its sunrise from here.
The Observatory Hill
This is the town’s most ancient and historical spot and consists of a temple, called the Mahakal, which lies and stands on this, and is reasoned to be the embodiment and incarnation of Lord Shiva. As per ancient fables, a Buddhist monastery used to exist here long back and was wiped out by the Nepalis in the nineteenth century. The Mahakal Temple is common to both the Hindus and the Buddhists and also helps in building up compatible relations between the two.
Batasia Coil
It is a railway coil and is situated at a distance of about five kilometres from the town and is a masterpiece and an impressive, splendid and unique sample of technical and practical engineering applications. The famous toy trains of the town take an unequalled and unparalled twist and bend via this coil. This renowned location and spot also contains a market wherein handbags, pocket books, money containers, cosmetic and ornamental items and other leather products are available at affordable prices.
The War Memorial
This memorial was built in the remembrance of those brave and gallant sons of this town and soil who laid down their lives for freeing this country from the clutches of the Britishers.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
This institute is one of the prime and stellar spots of this town and attracts numerous tourists towards it. It is located in Jawahar Parbat and was established by the late Tenzing Norgay, who conquered Mount Everest for the first time alongside Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. The instruments used during this climb are on display in this institute and arouse a lot of interest in tourists.
This institute was raised with keeping in mind the aims and objectives of teaching mountaineering abilities to all the supporters and climbers. Tenzing was one of the organizing associates and the field head and decision maker of this institute. It also consists of a museum that handles and keeps an uncommon and scarce compilation of antique pieces and souvenirs from different Everest crusades, adventures and campaigns.
The Mall
The Mall of this town is very famous for its best-selling, fashionable, market and retail values. It is one of the places that is often used as a hanging and chilling out destination by the people and tourists of Darjeeling. They come here with their relatives and friends and spend some quality time of their lives. They unwind and loosen up a bit and get busy with shopping.
The markets located here are very modern and consist of all products ranging from handicrafts to souvenirs and from mementos to woollen clothes, among many others.
It has an area called Chowrasta, wherein the children can ride on ponnies and have fun. This is the perfect place for shopping and relaxing and for enjoying the beauty, vivacity, variety, charismatic appeal and splendor of nature. Beautiful and gorgeous valleys are visible from here and look wonderful to the eyes of the tourists.
Chowrasta
Chowrasta stands in the middle of the town and is regarded as the heart of the city. It is the money-making centre of the town and is also one of the busiest places in Darjeeling. This is the place where the mall road begins and ends. There are abundant restaurants, hotels and shops here, which are visited by the tourists and the local people of the town.
Ornaments, woollen clothes, souvenirs, mementos, handiworks, sculptures and other international products, goods and commodities are available in plenty for the buyers and tourists and are sold reasonably cheap to them. The domestic handworks of these shops and markets are very much in need by most of the tourists and local people of Darjeeling.
Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway Station
It is a fun and chaming spot of the town and is one of the hot tourist destinations. The station is located at north point and is at a distance of three kilometres from the town. The cable trolley accommodates six passengers at the same time and glides over the exuberant green surroundings, hills and tea gardens of the town. The rides give exceptionally beautiful eye shots of the Kanchenjunga mountain ranges, River Rangeet and Sikkim to the tourists.
Dhoom Gompa
It is a beautiful and stunning monastery which is situated at a distance of around eight kilometres from the town and has some of the uncommon Buddhist documented materials and is also the house to the attractive, graceful and pleasing statue of the ‘Maitrayie’ or ‘The Coming Buddha.’
Museum of Natural History
This museum is amazingly natural and stunning and has a good compilation of the fauna of the Eastern Himalayas. It is placed near the mall and is open to the public.
Dhirdham Temple
It is located beneath the rail station of the town and what is really interesting is the fact that it is a ditto copy of the Pashupatinath Temple of Kathmandu in Nepal. It is visited by many tourists all round the year.
Also, the rides on the toy trains, trekking in the Singalila ranges and rafting in river Rangeet are some of the other interesting and fun things that the tourists can indulge in, while visiting travel and tourism places in Darjeeling.
